Essay-Writing Talks and Workshops
Through my essay-writing talks and workshops, I offer free or low-cost help on college application essays.
I have developed a short PowerPoint presentation to introduce students, parents, teachers, and administrators – or any combination thereof – to the college essay writing process. I talk about what admissions committees are looking for, what they are not looking for, and how to write a great essay with or without a tutor. The presentation works for groups large and small and has been well received at the Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn Tech High School and elsewhere.
I help students write their application essays in workshop settings, a powerful and lower-cost alternative to individual tutoring. Students may form their own peer groups or tell me they are interested in joining a group and I will try to form one with students on similar schedules. Over a four-week period, participants write, revise, and discuss their essays and receive one-on-one feedback from me. The accountability provided by a group is an excellent motivator!
“Thanks, Shea, for all your work… I’ll be singing your praises to parents for years to come!”
“The writer is one who, embarking upon a task, does not know what to do. . . . Writing is a process of dealing with not-knowing, a forcing of what and how.”
